Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can we help you?

At Sheldon Family Dental, we want you to feel confident about the dentistry you choose for your smile. Both Dr. Ali Ismail and Dr. Carla Ismail welcome your questions and will patiently explain any procedures they recommend for your oral health and smile.

If you're wondering about insurance of benefits or the cost of your dentistry, our front office team is eager to hear from you.

Some of the most common questions we hear are listed below, but if your question is not covered, simply give our Canton, MI dental office a call. We are always happy to help.

Other

We work with all major insurance companies and offer an in-house insurance plan for patients who do not have coverage. Contact our team to talk about any out-of-pocket expenses and how to budget your necessary dental care.

Children's Dentistry

We recommend that you bring your child in for their first “happy visit” around the age of two. This first visit will focus on helping your child get acclimated to the sights and sounds of the dental office and to get to know our team.

At this first visit, they will not likely have a teeth cleaning, unless your little one is particularly cooperative. We usually perform the first dental cleaning around the age of three, but we always go at your child’s pace and let them guide our efforts.

Dr. Ali and Dr. Carla have children of their own, so they know all of the many ways that children need special dental care. They strive to make every visit fun, interactive, educational, and stress-free for your little one, so they have a positive view of dentistry and their own oral care.

If it’s time for your child’s first dental appointment, we welcome you to contact our Canton dental office for compassionate and gentle children’s dentistry services like checkups, cleanings, fluoride, and dental sealants. We also offer nitrous oxide for kids who need a procedure, but who feel a little nervous about it.

We look forward to welcoming your entire family.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Many of us had metal fillings as kids, and they have been there ever since. Although there is nothing wrong with having metal fillings, we do recommend that you have them evaluated by Dr. Ali or Dr. Carla. Because of the expansion and contraction that is common in metal, these fillings can develop small cracks or pull away from the tooth, leaving it vulnerable to bacteria and decay down the road.

Most dentistry will need to be replaced at some point if you have it for a long time.

Of course, if you dislike the color of your metal fillings and prefer a more natural-looking option, we are happy to discuss tooth-colored fillings and crowns with you. We safely remove any metal and clean the area before adding the correct shade of composite to the tooth.

Some large metal fillings might need a dental crown rather than a filling because metal fillings require the removal of more tooth structure to anchor in place. In some cases, not enough healthy tooth structure remains for a white filling. Our dental crowns are natural-looking and durable.

Give us a call at our Canton dental office to learn more about replacing metal dentistry, or to book an appointment to replace older dentistry.

At Sheldon Family Dental, we offer two teeth whitening options – in-office and take-home whitening systems. If you are on a tight timeline, in-office teeth whitening will give you a jumpstart for your special occasion.

Glo Science Teeth Whitening Systems

Many of our patients opt to start with an in-office whitening session followed by teeth whitening at home for maximum results. For the in-office session, we apply the professional-strength whitening gel and activate it with a special light. Each application is for about 20 minutes each, and we repeat the process three times.

You can leave our office with a smile that is multiple shades whiter than when you came in.

Glo Science take-home teeth whitening requires custom teeth whitening trays, which we will make for you in our Canton dental office. You take them home and add whitening gel and wear them for about 30 minutes each day for a week or two until you reach your desired shade.

When Is the Best Time to Whiten Your Teeth?

You can achieve the best results by whitening your teeth right after a professional teeth cleaning. If you are interested in a whiter smile, talk to your dentist or hygienist, and we will get your trays started the same day.

If you are a new patient, we offer free teeth whitening trays with your first dental cleaning and exam!

Crowns and Bridges

At Sheldon Family Dental, we never push expensive dental treatment. It’s more important to Dr. Ali and Dr. Carla that you get the best dentistry for your situation. In some cases, a dental filling may be enough to repair a cavity or a chipped tooth, but if too much tooth structure is missing or compromised, a dental crown may be a better option.

Dental crowns are generally more effective in protecting root canal teeth, broken teeth, and back molars that absorb much of the force of chewing.

Our dentists will discuss each option with you, along with the benefits and limitations of each. We can help you make a choice that gives you beautiful, long-lasting results. We use natural-looking tooth-colored restorations in our Canton dental office. We believe your dentistry should look as great as it feels.

If you have dental insurance, we will discuss your benefits with you so that you can estimate and plan for any out-of-pocket expenses. No insurance? No problem. Our in-office insurance plan will help defray some of the costs of your dental treatment.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth that replaces the entire tooth structure, including the root. At Sheldon Family Dental, we offer free dental implant consultations with either Dr. Ali or Dr. Carla.

Dental implants are the best way to replace missing teeth because they help prevent the bone loss that is common with tooth loss, they never decay, and they can last a lifetime with the proper care.

Our dentists use a surgical guide to precisely place the dental implant in the ideal location where it has the best chance of success. Once we place the dental implant, it will need about 4-6 months to heal before we complete the final crown. The dental implant will integrate with your jaw bone over months and become stable. You never have to worry about a dental implant slipping or moving.

We can also use dental implants to secure either bridges or dentures. This combines the stability of dental implants with the affordability of dentures or bridges to replace multiple missing teeth at once.

If you would like to arrange a free dental implant consultation, contact our Canton, MI dental office today. We see patients from Canton, Plymouth, Ann Arbor, Livonia, and Westland.
